Seasonal notes

When the snow holds, and when it does not

Timing, reliability caveats and pass planning for a Carpathian winter, written so you can plan around the weak weeks instead of discovering them on the mountain.

Season window
Lifts usually run from mid-December to late March. Cover becomes dependable from early January, and the first week of December is best treated as a gamble.
Snow reliability
Base depths of 40–60 cm at 1,200 m are normal in January. Runs below that altitude turn soft after a warm spell, so read the snow depth figure per resort rather than a single regional number.
Holiday pressure
The New Year week and Orthodox Christmas on 7 January are the busiest days of the season. Lift queues roughly double and lodging rates climb sharply, so book those dates first or avoid them.
Pass planning
Multi-day passes cost less per ski day than walk-up tickets. Buy online the evening before your first day, and expect weekend single-day rates to be the highest of the week.
Weather holds
High winds close upper lifts on exposed ridges. Keep one spare day in a five-day trip so a closed morning does not wipe out your only chance at the summit runs.

Conditions move week to week. Check the dated figures in our comparison ledger, or return to the resort shortlist to match a window with a mountain.
